The 2021 MTV EMAs took place in Budapest, Hungary, and were broadcast live in the US on Sunday, November 14, 2021 at 3 PM ET from the Papp László Sports Arena in Budapest on 2022 MTV Europe Music Award Nominees and WINNERS.
The 2021 MTV Europe Music Awards adopted the subject “Music for All” in an effort to show support for the LBTQ+ community in the aftermath of Hungary’s new anti-gay laws.

MTV EMA nominations for 2022 (also see WINNERS, below) Doja Cat and Lil Nas X both received six nominations, with Justin Bieber taking the lead with eight. Following with five nods apiece were The Kid Laroi, Olivia Rodrigo, and Ed Sheeran on 2022 MTV Europe Music Award Nominees and WINNERS.
MTV EMA fun facts
• Record holders for most career EMA wins include Justin Bieber with 20, followed by Eminem with 15, and Lady Gaga with 10.
• Metallica caused a backstage uproar at the 1996 EMAs when they performed the songs “So What?” instead of their scheduled single, “King Nothing”. The expletive-laden “So What?” was heard unedited during the live telecast, but was deleted in all later rebroadcasts.
• The most dazzling entrance ever at the EMAs happened during the show in 2000, when Jennifer Lopez entered the stage from the ceiling in a specially built plane to perform “Love Don’t Cost a Thing”.
