Patrick Sokhela’s sale of AmaZulu to billionaire Sandile Zungu was announced on October 2, 2020. The new ownership set forward a 12-year strategy right away that would see the team improve its reputation and stature in South African football. In order to carry out this plan, Zungu hired Benni McCarthy as head coach, and Siyabonga Nomvethe and Vasili Manousakis, McCarthy’s former assistant from Cape Town City, joined the club as assistant coaches.

In his first season as AmaZulu’s owner, Sandile Zungu saw his club finish second to Mamelodi Sundowns and earn a spot in the first CAF Champions League preliminary stage. With a combined score of 3-2, the squad defeated Nyasa Big Bullets in the opening round with AmaZulu FC Squad 2022/2023.
AmaZulu advanced to the second preliminary round against TP Mazembe, an African powerhouse, and won on away goals to advance to the group rounds of the competition. AmaZulu is the ninth South African team to go through the preliminary rounds of the continent’s premier club championship.
