In order to lessen the impact of COVID-19-related absences, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that teams would be permitted to make up to five substitutes during games at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Additionally, according to the rules, if a team has at least 11 players available, even if that number does not include a designated goalie, they must play; otherwise, they forfeit the match. On Sunday, the tournament begins when host Cameroon plays Burkina Faso CAF to Allow Five Substitutions.
The rules were explained in a statement on the CAF website, which confirmed: “Each team will be allowed to deploy a maximum of five substitutions.
Each team will only be allowed a maximum of three substitutes throughout the game; substitutions are also permitted at halftime in an effort to minimize match interruption. In the event that both sides substitute at the same time, each team will have three chances to score CAF to Allow Five Substitutions.
“Opportunities and substitutes not used during regulation time are carried over into overtime. Where extra time is played, each side must be permitted one more substitute and shall have one further chance for substitution; substitutions may also be performed prior to the commencement of extra time and at the midway point of extra time.”
CAF to Allow Five Substitutions
Any side of CAF to Allow Five Substitutions that cannot field 11 players would forfeit the game and lose 2-0, the CAF affirmed on the minimum number of players necessary.

If a team has a minimum of 11 players who have tested negative and are available, they must play a match. If there isn’t a goalie on the squad, another player from the team must step in as long as there are at least 11 players available CAF to Allow Five Substitutions.
“A team shall be deemed to have lost the match 0-2 if it does not have at least 11 players available. In extraordinary circumstances, the Africa Cup of Nations organizing committee will decide how to proceed.
