A professional soccer league in Canada is known as the Canadian Premier League (CPL or CanPL; French: Première ligue canadienne). The CPL regular season and championship winners receive invitations to compete against other North American teams in the CONCACAF Champions League.
In the Canadian Championship, all CPL teams compete against Canadian clubs from different leagues. CPL teams may qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League by winning the Canadian Championship.
The league’s soft start date of 2018 was eventually postponed to 2019. The league was formally sanctioned by the Canadian Soccer Association on May 6, 2017, with an initial debut date of 2019. A number of restrictions are in place to guarantee that the league’s primary goal of developing Canadian soccer talent and the sport as a whole is achieved.
