The premier professional association football league in Ghana is called the Ghana Premier League. The Ghana Football Association oversees the league, which was officially established in 1956 to take the place of the Gold Coast Club Competition, a previous league incarnation that had existed between 1933 and 1953–54.

From 2001 to 2010, the IFFHS ranked the league as the 11th best in Africa, and in the first decade of the twenty-first century, it was ranked 65th in the IFFHS’ list of the Best Leagues of the World (2001–2010).

February 4, 2014 Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko have ruled it. At the conclusion of each season, the Division One League in Ghana relegates the worst three teams, who are then assigned to each zone.

The COVID-19 epidemic in Ghana, which matched the reason for postponing or canceling association football leagues and competitions throughout the world, caused the 2019–20 season to be suspended and ultimately cancelled.
