The annual MAMA Awards, originally known as the Mnet Asian Music Awards, are one of the biggest music awards shows. The event was first hosted in South Korea, and while other Asian musicians have won in a variety of award categories, including Best Asian Artist and other career-related honors, K-pop singers have taken home the bulk of the accolades.

The first awards presentation, which was broadcast on Mnet, took place in Seoul in 1999. Between 2010 and 2017 and again in 2019, MAMA was also hosted in a number of other Asian nations and cities, and it now broadcasts online outside of Asia.

The MAMA Awards for this year will be held in the 40,000-seat Kyocera Dome Osaka in Japan. The ceremony will take place on November 29 and 30, which will be the first time it takes place across two days.

The Mnet Music Video Festival, a music video awards ceremony based on the MTV Video Music Awards, was introduced in 1999. The Mnet KM Music Video Festival was created in 2004 when it united with the KMTV Korean Music Awards. Due to the popularity of Hallyu towards the middle of the 2000s, the awards show gained considerable worldwide attention, and in 2008 it was broadcast in China and Japan.

Ilgan Sports stated on July 20, 2021, that plans were being made for the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards to take place in Hong Kong despite the current epidemic and travel restrictions.
