Man United Most Expensive Transfers

Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, Angel Di Maria, and V are Man Utd’s Most Expensive Transfers just a few of the players who have helped United often break the £50 million mark. But which players—both within and outside the team—have been a part of Man Utd’s 10 biggest moves?

In an effort to help the Red Devils win their first league championship since 2012–13, we count down from No. 10 to No. 1. Manchester United has never been afraid to spend big money in their pursuit of being the world’s top team.

But as Premier League championships have declined in recent years, they have been compelled to increase their spending.

PAUL POGBA £89m

POGBA joined Juventus in 2012 after only three Premier League matches for United as Man United Most Expensive Transfers. He was known as one of the top midfielders in the world when he returned four years ago for a then-world record £89 million.

However, injuries and rumors of trouble have plagued his return to Old Trafford. Pogba has expressed his intention to depart in 2019, and Real Madrid has already expressed interest.

Pogba is having trouble making the first team in 2020–21; the preferred midfield trio is Fred, McTominay, and Fernandes. The 2018 World Cup champion hasn’t scored in seven games this season after scoring just once in 16 Premier League games last year.

HARRY MAGUIRE £85m

MAGUIRE joined United last year in a transaction that increased from £80 million to £85 million as Man United Most Expensive Transfers, making him the most expensive defender in the world.

The England center defender, who was probably the first name on the teamsheet, played a record-breaking 55 times in all competitions during his first campaign. Maguire has failed to maintain his top performance this season, which is somewhat understandable, but he has still featured in 10 games and scored one goal.

After scoring in the 3-0 victory over Ireland, Maguire even scored again for England after the interval. His first came in the quarterfinal victory over Sweden at the 2018 World Cup.

CRISTIANO RONALDO £80m

RONALDO scored 118 goals in 292 games in all competitions before leaving United in 2009 to go with Real Madrid for a then-record £80 million as Man United Most Expensive Transfers. At Old Trafford, the Portuguese superstar won the first of his five Ballons d’Or awards, three Premier League championships, one Champions League trophy, and one.

But after moving to Real Madrid, where he scored an average of more than one goal per game while appearing in 438 games, things only got better for Ronaldo.

During his nine-year stint, Ronaldo won two LaLiga championships and four Champions League trophies. He then left to join Juventus in 2018 for £99 million. Ronaldo has won back-to-back Serie A championships since relocating to Italy, but he has recently been linked with a return to Manchester United.

ROMELU LUKAKU £75m & £73m

Lukaku is Man United Most Expensive Transfers, who has appeared twice on this list, was acquired from Everton in 2017 for an astounding £75 million. Lukaku struggled with consistency at Old Trafford during his two seasons there, although he sometimes shown his extraordinary skill.

In 66 Premier League appearances, the Belgian scored 28 goals. Last summer, Inter Milan purchased him for £73 million, just £2 million less than what they paid for him.

Since his transfer, Lukaku has developed into one of the top attackers in the world, tallying 41 goals in just 57 appearances in Italy, including five Serie A goals in as few as six games.

In just two games this season in the Champions League, Lukaku has also scored twice.

ANGEL DI MARIA £59.7m & £44m

The Argentine great appears TWICE on our list since he was engaged in a high-profile transfer to and from Old Trafford. In 2014, Di Maria moved from Real Madrid to United for a then-club record £59.7 million, also a British record.

But after just one lackluster season, he was sold to Paris Saint-Germain at a loss of about £16 million as Man United Most Expensive Transfers.

The winger, who has racked up several awards in France, only managed three goals in 27 Premier League contests, one of which being his infamous chip against Leicester. Di Maria, who has 15 titles to his name, including four Ligue 1 championships, is still with PSG today.

FRED £52m

THE Brazilian midfielder moved to the team in 2018 for an astounding £52 million from Shakhtar Donetsk as Man United Most Expensive Transfers. Fred has only scored once in 52 Premier League appearances since his arrival.

Early in his career, Fred caused controversy among supporters, but this year, he has settled into a key position in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s 4-2-3-1 configuration.

Between the defense and Fernandes, the ex-Shakhtar star and Scott McTominay have forged an outstanding connection in the two deep-lying areas.

The 11-cap Brazil international hasn’t competed for his nation since October 2018, and he hasn’t won a title with United either. But he was awarded to the Europa League Squad of the Season last season thanks to a strong campaign.

BRUNO FERNANDES £50.8m

FERNANDES signed a five-and-a-half-year contract to join United in January for £46.6 million as Man United Most Expensive Transfers. United has now spent $50.8 million on the No. 10, who was instrumental in guiding the team back into the Champions League.

With the remaining £4.2 million contingent on appearances at the Old Trafford club, that sum may increase to £55 million. In just 22 Premier League appearances, Fernandes has already scored 13 goals. His accurate penalties helped the team get some crucial victories towards the close of the previous season.

Recently, Fernandes scored twice as United rallied from a goal down to defeat Everton 3-1 in an effort to turn around their season following a rough start.

AARON WAN-BISSAKA £50m

Wan-Bissaka became the sixth-most expensive defender in football history after joining United at the beginning of last season. At the time of his move, he was also the most expensive uncapped English player.

The right-back has established himself as one of the top defensive full-backs in the world since leaving Palace, where he was crowned the team’s Player of the Year in 2018–19. To succeed in the modern game, some detractors contend, he must improve his offensive style.

Wan-Bissaka is Man United Most Expensive Transfers played in all bar three of the top-flight games last season and has already made 41 Premier League outings.

According to his previous club, Martial’s cost COULD increase to £57.6 million contingent on incentives, although it is now estimated to be £44.5 million.

Since arriving, Martial has scored 73 goals in 229 appearances, mostly operating on the left wing. Since arriving from France, he has won the FA Cup, Europa League, and League Cup. The 25-cap France striker is yet to score a goal in four Premier League contests this year.

NEMANJA MATIC £40m

Matic joined United in 2017 as Man United Most Expensive Transfers after spending three more years at Chelsea during his second stay at Stamford Bridge. Since then, Matic has appeared in 128 games for the Red Devils, including 89 Premier League contests.

The 48-cap Serbian star with Man Utd has yet to take home a trophy, though he came the closest in 2017–18 when his team lost the FA Cup final. Matic, who is still with the team, signed right away after United won the Europa League and League Cup double.
