The final round before the break will take place on November 12–13, with the 2022 FIFA World Cup starting on November 21. The league will then pick back up on December 27.
Since there will only be 18 clubs left after the 2023–24 season, four teams will be demoted to Ligue 2 at the end of the current campaign. As a result, there won’t be any playoffs at the end of the season. The current champions are Paris Saint-Germain.
The 2021–22 Ligue 2 saw the promotion of Toulouse (after a two-year hiatus), Ajaccio (after an eight-year absence to Ligue 1), and AJ Auxerre (after a ten-year absence to Ligue 1). After thirty years in the top division, Bordeaux, Metz, and Saint-Étienne were all demoted to Ligue 2 in 2022–23. Saint-Étienne was demoted after eighteen years in the top division.
The 2022–23 season of Ligue 1 will include a total of twenty clubs.
