The man who would become known as Pelé, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, entered the world of soccer at the age of 16, dominating for both club team Santos and the Brazilian national team.
By the end of his playing career is Mchezaji Alieshinda Mara Nyingi Kombe La Dunia, Pelé had led Brazil to three FIFA World Cup victories, the most of any player.
In 1958, Pelé won his first World Cup in Sweden, where he had a significant impact on the competition. In his lone first-round appearance, he contributed an assist for a goal before scoring the game’s only goal against Wales in the quarterfinal. Before tallying a brace in the 5-2 triumph against the hosts, he scored a hat-trick in the semifinal victory over France.

Even though his efforts were far less, he would win his second title at the very following competition, held in Chile in 1962. After contributing to Brazil’s 2-0 victory against Mexico in the tournament opener, Pelé suffered an injury in the very next game that forced him to sit out the rest of the competition. But Brazil, the last country to do so and one of just two in history, would follow the course set out for them by their hero and win a second consecutive championship.
After promising to never participate in the World Cup again as a result of the vicious targeted tackling he endured throughout the 1966 championship, Pelé achieved his third and last victory in 1970.
He made the right choice; in addition to performing admirably in Mexico, Pelé also earned the Golden Ball for his four goals, the best of which came in the 4-1 triumph against Italy in the championship game.
Only 20 other men, excluding Pelé, have ever won more than two World Cups, but none of them excelled enough or endured long enough to win a third and equal the legend. Eight of the 20 individuals—who never set foot on a World Cup pitch—won trophies. Additionally, 13 of those 20 players—who were on the same teams on which Pelé played in 1958 and 1962—won their doubles.
Only one nation has won three World Cups since Pelé’s final victory, and Germany didn’t do so until the 2014 competition.
Pelé is without a doubt the greatest/Mchezaji Alieshinda Mara Nyingi Kombe La Dunia renowned national team player of all time, even though his career goal total may be in doubt and his flair for the dramatic may not be as well-known as that of his historical opponents.
