Melbourne Heart was established in 2009, and the team played under that moniker until its debut 2010–11 season before being renamed by the City Football Group (CFG), in collaboration with Holding M.S. Australia, in the middle of 2014. To acquire full control of the team, City Football Group acquired the Holding M.S. Australia consortium in August 2015.

The team has its home games at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, also known as AAMI Park commercially, a multi-use facility with 30,050 seats in Melbourne’s City Centre. Along with a senior women’s squad that participates in the A-League Women, the club also has an associated junior team that plays in both the National Youth League and the third tier of the NPL Victoria league.
