The club, which split from another Tanzania Giants, Dar Young Africans, in 1936, was given the moniker Queens in honor of Her Majesty, the Queen of England. The name of the club changed multiple times, from Queens to Eagles to Sunderland. They were nicknamed Simba in 1971.
Simba SC has the largest fan following and social media engagement in Tanzania, followed by its competitors. Simba SC and Young Africans SC (Yanga) have won 21 league titles and five domestic cups, as well as competing in the CAF Champions League on many occasions.
