The Premier League, commonly known as Liga Portugal 1, Liga Portugal Bwin, or Primeira Liga, is the highest tier in the Portuguese football league structure. Since the 2014–15 season, 18 clubs have competed in this Liga Portugal–organized and –supervised league, with the three teams with the worst records being demoted to the Liga Portugal 2 and being replaced by the top three non–reserve teams from this level.

For the first time since 1990, it surpassed the French Ligue 1, one of the storied “big five” European leagues, to enter the top five during the 2011–12 season. A fourth-place finish in the world was also achieved by the Primeira Liga in the 2011 IFFHS rankings.
