The State University of Zanzibar Courses, Act No. 8 of 1999 of the Zanzibar House of Representatives created the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA), which was later revised by Act No. 11 of 2009 and again by Act No. 7 of 2016.
The latter change has allowed SUZA to consolidate with other Zanzibar higher education institutions, including the College of Health Sciences (CHS), the Zanzibar Institute of Tourism Development, and the former Zanzibar Institute of Financial Administration (ZIFA) (ZIToD) in The State University of Zanzibar Courses.

The Chancellor of the University is His Excellency Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council. In September 2001, the University began accepting students.
SUZA wants to improve its standing even further. Along with maintaining a reputation for providing high-quality education, SUZA is stepping up its research efforts to have a greater worldwide impact in the creation of new knowledge and, ultimately, the resolution of complex global puzzles The State University of Zanzibar Courses.
