The current champions, FCI Levadia, are coming off of their 10th Meistriliiga championship. When the league was first established in 1992, amateur clubs were permitted to participate and it was a semi-professional competition. Since the 2020 season, the league has become entirely professional thanks to solidarity procedures.

The season runs from March to November, similar to other places where the winters are cold. There are 10 clubs in the Meistriliiga, and each team plays the other four times. The second-last team competes in a two-legged play-off for a spot in the Meistriliiga after each season, with the worst team being relegated.
