The Azzurri suffered a shocking 1-0 loss to North Macedonia in their World Cup play-off semifinal match, and the Euro 2020 champions, who hadn’t missed a World Cup since 1958, have now missed two in a row.
Following a 10-0 victory over San Marino in a match when the Three Lions simply needed a point, England had no issues securing their spot in Qatar. And later this year, Gareth Southgate’s team won’t have to worry about playing some of the top talents in the world.

Which athletes won’t be attending Qatar 2022?
Erling Haaland
The striker, who is regarded as one of football’s most promising young players, will have to wait for the opportunity to demonstrate his abilities in front of a large audience.
After the Netherlands and Turkey in Group G, Norway, which hasn’t qualified for a significant international competition since Euro 2000, came in third.
But despite being without injured Borussia Dortmund star Haaland, Norway was defeated 2-0 and will no longer compete in this year’s competition.

Jorginho
Italy, who won Euro 2020, missed qualifying for the World Cup for the second time in a row. Italians lost to North Macedonia 1-0 in their play-off semifinal after failing to get out of their group.
Numerous well-known people won’t be in Qatar as a result. Jorginho of Chelsea, Gianluigi Donnarumma of Paris Saint-Germain, and Giorgio Chiellini of Juventus will all remain at home.
Additionally missing are Marco Verratti, Leonardo Bonucci, Nicolo Barella, Federico Chiesa, Lorenzo Insigne, and Ciro Immobile.
Mo Salah
After Egypt’s defeat against Senegal, Salah will not be attending the World Cup this year. Senegal defeated Egypt in a penalty shootout in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final earlier this year.
Sadio Mane, Salah’s teammate at Liverpool, ended up winning the World Cup despite Salah’s desperation to represent his nation.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
The controversy surrounding Aubameyang’s contentious departure from Arsenal and subsequent move to Barcelona has given his career new life. However, he won’t be able to carry his strong play into the World Cup because Gabon was eliminated.
The Panthers’ captain Aubameyang failed to motivate them as they placed a dismal second to Egypt in their AFC group.

Wilfried Zaha
Ivory Coast is another significant African nation that missed out on the World Cup. Between 2006 and 2014, Ivory Coast qualified for three consecutive World Cups, although they have since missed two consecutive competitions.
Many prominent names won’t be in Qatar since the Elephants were defeated by Cameroon for first place in their group. Wilfried Zaha of Crystal Palace is one among them, along with others like Nicolas Pepe, Franck Kessie, Sebastien Haller, and Eric Bailly.
Ibrahimovic Zlatan
In Sweden’s World Cup qualifying loss to Spain, the seasoned striker was shown recklessly charging Cesar Azpilicueta with his shoulder.
Ibrahimovic was sidelined for Sweden’s vital World Cup play-off victory against Czech Republic after receiving a booking off camera following the altercation. Ibrahimovic came off the bench when the Swedes played Poland, but he couldn’t prevent a 2-0 loss.
Ibra has not participated in the competition since Germany 2006 and is unlikely to do so again given his age. He just recently made a comeback to the international scene after a five-year sabbatical.

Alexis Sanchez
Chile under Sanchez failed to qualify for the World Cup and hence missed the tournament. Sanchez, a football legend in Chile and currently a player for Inter Milan, has competed in two World Cups. However, he won’t attend the third and maybe last one.
Radamel Falcao
Falcao and Colombia performed poorly in the CONMEBOL qualifying, similar to Sanchez’s Chile. Los Cafeteros attended the last two competitions, but they won’t travel to Qatar. Falcao now has 99 caps for his nation, but he won’t be able to add any more at the World Cup.
Riyad Mahrez
Mahrez’s Algeria are yet to reach the World Cup. Algeria, the 2019 AFCON champions, lost to Cameroon in their CAF play-off clash. So there will still be no World Cup for Algeria.
