In addition to winning championships with Manchester City, his play in 2016 contributed to Leicester City’s historic victory in the English Premier League. He was named the league’s top player for that particular season.
With that achievement, Mahrez, who many thought would finish in the top five, reached the Ballon d’Or top 10 and ended seventh. However, he is doing really well for that job.
Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast)
Drogba had a successful year in 2006, winning the Premier League twice in a row with Chelsea’s significant support. Drogba finished in the top 10 of the Ballon d’Or award, and while not taking home the prize the following year, he did finish in the top five.
He came in fourth place in the 2007 Ballon d’Or vote, trailing only Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi. He came close to winning the world championship that year, but Mali’s Frederic Kanoute took home the prize for best African player instead.
