The club’s headquarters are in the Truganina neighborhood in western Melbourne, and it aspires to represent western Victoria, including western suburbs of Melbourne, regional areas like Ballarat, Bendigo, and Geelong, and small villages in the region.
The club was first founded as a result of an expansion process in the A-League, the top football league in the nation. It debuted in the 2019–20 A–League campaign with permission from Football Australia (FA).
The current home venues for Western United games are AAMI Park in Melbourne, GMHBA Stadium in Geelong, Mars Stadium in Ballarat, and University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston.
However, the team plans to move all future home games to Wyndham City Stadium, a stadium designed specifically for soccer, which is located in Tarneit, Wyndham.
